Our Customer Harry Finally Gets Two Bottles Of ALBERTI 154 Malbec 2011, $17.99, From Mendoza, Argentina That He's Patiently Waited For From Us @ Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits In Northwest, Washington D.C., 20008 Wednesday December 11th, 2013 : Happy Holidays 2013 Harry! Enjoy!!

Harry finally got his wine! Wow, this is good! He has been asking for the ALBERTI 154 2011, $17.99, 14% alcohol by  volume, Malbec from Mendoza, Argentina. We had been out of it for a month or so and I have been promising Harry this wine now for quite some time and I am thrilled that on his third or is it the fourth visit here that we had it. He saw he and immediately asked without any other introductions : " Is the ALBERTI 154 Malbec in? " I smiled and said : " Yes, it's been here now for several days. " Both Michel and I went to reach for it at the same time! Michel also obviously knew that Harry wanted some ALBERTI 154 Malbec that we buy from our local rep Marci Weinstein here of Constantine Imports. This was good, all good : a happy ending to this saga. Harry brought two bottles to the register to buy yesterday, Wednesday afternoon, December 11th, 2013. Cheers and happy holidays Harry to you and to your family. Thanks for being patient with us and not losing faith that we would have it for you again. I remember maybe a year or more ago when Harry discovered this ALBERTI 154 Malbec. It's obviously been a favorite ever since. Cheers,  ...   A good bottle to stay warm in in this really cold arctic air blowing through now with snow still on the ground and baby blue skies now. Bundle up all.   TONY

Anthony Quinn's #Wine Store Email From Late November 2011 : #Happy Thanksgiving & #Happy Hanakkah Everyone, #Happy HOlidays To One & To All!

Cleveland Park Wine Cleveland Park Beer, Liquor & Wine
Featuring a wide, international selection of fine wines, micro-brews and
spirits
THE WHOLE STORE IS A THANKSGIVING compilation of many ideas and subtle
suggestions for you all to try this 2011! We are already being bombarded with
so much Christmas music and I feel that we should wait until this Sunday after
Thanksgiving to be playing it so much. I do love it. I told this to Eon this
morning as we both stocked the shelves and started to get ready for this really
busy week here in Cleveland Park. It was a really fine weekend this past one
and we were busy from start to close thanks to all of you out there with so
many special requests.

WE JUST RECEIVED the JULES TAYLOR wines 2011 New Zealand Marlborough Sauvignon
Blanc ( $18.99 ) that just did the top honors - Grand Champion at the Old
Ebbitt Grill Oyster Riot- Fest ( out of hundreds of wines tasted, actually this
year out of 233 submitted - it will be poured by the glass at the Old Ebbitt
Grill for the next six months I believe? ).

WE MET THE WINE-MAKER/owner Jules Taylor perhaps in May 2011 here with our rep
Mark. She has a lovely British accent. We really liked it then and are
delighted to have more of it here to offer you as you come in search of it.
Some of you stopped by last Saturday mentioning this and saying that it
reminded you a lot of Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc at a better price. We all like
that, a better price that is : especially when the wine is as good as this 2011
JULES TAYLOR. WE have some in stock now for you all to get with your oysters
... just in time for Thanksgiving.

WE ALSO HAVE FREISA : that's the Italian word for strawberries! It's also the
name for an Italian wine made in the Piemonte region of northwestern Italy by
Frabce and Switzerland. This one is called CAVALLOTTO. It's from the famous
Langhe region: this one called " Bricco Boschis ", it's a 2008 ( $22.99 , 14%
alcohol by volume ). It was just in yesterday's Washington Post Sunday edition
Food section wine article in time for Thanksgiving titled : " What Do You Pair
With Baloney ? " by Dave McIntyre.

DAVE GAVE THE FREISA dry Piemonte CAVALLOTTO red two and a half stars  out of
three and wrote : " This delicious red seems to capture a autumn in a bottle
with earthy, leafy notes and a hint of decay - in a cyclical sense, like a
ferris wheel beginning its descent, sure to come around again. " Sounds like
what I might write. We will open it here and give you all a taste.Probably
later tonight as this email is fresh in your minds having just read it. SO:
Join us tonight for a taste of the indigenous grape Freisa which very few
people know much about as there is not a whole lot of it around. Cheers.

RECENTLY I HAVE BEEN ASKED ABOUT HOLIDAY party wines either to take yourselves
to a party or when you are hosting it. This is what I wrote in response to
those questions earlier today.

WE DON'T HAVE TO ALL BE REDUCED to the least amount of choices. There's plenty
of choices. There always has been. You just have to know where to look for it.
Here are some examples that I will mention here today to show you all just how
much range and flexibility you all really do have. We are always ready and
eager to assist you make your dreams or those of your friends' come true.

YOU CAN BE REALLY PROUD of what you bring / and or serve and it can help really
make your party special and not just a carbon copy of so many others'. You can
stand out just like the wines you serve or you bring.

YOU SIMPLY HAVE TO CHOOSE wisely and go with your gut and heart. You can be a
success beyond imagination and still bring or serve something that is
especially meaningful to you ; and that can be anything and any style, color,
dryness or sweetness, sparkling or not, and sized from bottle to box, from
kitchy and commercial to serious and known labels, from almost any state here
in the U.S., from almost any country.

YOUR WINE CHOICES For Your Parties at UNDER $20 a bottle or box can be kosher,
vegan, biodynamic,  with really low-sulfer content, you name it?!? I know that
we can help you find it whatever it may be.

BE PROACTIVE, don't always wait to the very last minute, give yourselves some
time to do it right. Give others like us a chance to find what is special and
right for you. Profit largely, win grandly with just a bit more time and
planning. You will greatly be rewarded for all of this. Let us help you realize
yours' and others' dreams and have them come true. Cheers.

THIS ALL SOUNDS LIKE ONE BIG PEP TALK. Well it is. I / we need as much as you
all do as this is simply the beginning of the rest of the year and there is a
lot to fill it with. One of our sales reps, for example from the WINEWORKS
Virginia wines of Michael Shaps just got married this past weekend. They are
playing the Pachelbell Canon in C is it( ? ) as I type this and I am wondering
if they played it at their wedding? I love it. Now this is a piece that they
can play before the end of Thanksgiving and that I never tire at hearing.
Lovely. Congratulations to you Allison and your new husband, too. May you
always be blessed, healthy and happy.

BY THE WAY : The Big-Theme American Holiday Wine-Apple Cider-&-Homemade D.C.
Chocolate Tasting last Wednesday was a grand success here. Everything showed
really well and we sold lots but still have lots here and so all that is
recommended for Thanksgiving as well. We are now selling Bailey's handmade
Washington D.C. chocolates and they are in a lovely display up by the register
and they start at $9.99 a bottle. You should try some of them. They are really
special.

THE BEAUJOLAIS THAT FOLLOWED THE NEXT DAY, Thursday was another BIG SUCCESS! We
opened the MANOIR DU CARRA BeaujolaisVillages ( $10.99 ) and Beaujolais Nouveau
bottles ( $9.99 ) : and both showed beautifully. I took a bottle home to my
wife that Thursday night of the Beaujolais-Villages Nouveau ( $10.99 ) and my
wife on the first sip and announced it was " good". That's all I need. Come and
check some out yourselves, it works really well with the meals at this time of
the year. Chill slightly and enjoy fully!

AND FOR THOSE OF YOU NOT WANTING NOUVEAU : we have the BROUILLY " Combiaty "
Vieilles-Vignes " 2007 ( Old Vines ) ( On Special for $15.99, regularly $22.99
). It's a medium-to-light-bodied 100% Gamay grape beaujolais that is a real
treat and ideal with white meats from turkey to goose to chicken and veal and
salmon, too. Lovely. We will open it here this week. Cheers.

FROMM'S : La Strada ( one of three they make ) New Zealand Marlborough Pinot
Noir 2004 ( On Special for $19.99, regularly $44.99 ) is still available and a
wonderful holiday wine. We got the last fifteen cases on Friday and are down to
seven now. Don't delay, get some today! We've already sold 35 cases. It's big,
flavorful, old-world style like the red Burgundy French wines. Best with a
meal, not really a sipping wine. It's pretty darn-gosh amazing with a meal I
will add! Cheers.

TERRABIANCA 2005 " Il Tesoro " Super-Tuscan Italian -young- dry- red -with-
tremendous- promise- still is ON SPECIAL for $33.99, regularly $44.99. IT'S A
BEAUTY, beautiful six-pack cases, and perfect for meals and for gifts. This
100% Merlot is like having a really fine Pomerol from Bordeaux, France. The
bottle is raise/ embossed like the French bottles of Cheateuneuf-du-Pape :
classy. This bottle may be enjoyed now with a meal or to age longer and enjoy
then. Either way it makes a really special gift. Buy a six pack and we will
take 10% off the price and make the bottle cost $30.59. WHAT A DEAL!

A COUPLE OF " New " FRENCH Specials :

1) AOP Cotes Du Rhone Villages 2009( $17.99, 14.5% ) from DOMAINE COSTE
CHAUDE Madrigal is a youthful, robust, hearty mouthful of 70% Grenache and 30%
Syrah. What at a treat.
2) Cotes Du Ventoux 2008 ( $17.99, 14% alcohol by volume ) from the
DOMAINE FONDRECHE / from Fayard has just been given Bob Parker's blessings and
we were lucky to get a couple more cases before it disappeared./ from Fayard.
WE tasted some of this a few months ago down at Lavandou Provencale restaurant
when Bobby Kacher had his portfolio wine-tasting at the Washington Club on
Dupont Circle. It showed really well with Florence's cooking. What a treat. It
will do really well now with the heartier meals, stews and roasts and
cassoulets that we make.
3) Crozes-Hermitage " Le Millepertuis " 2007 ( great vintage ) northern
French wine made from 100% Syrah. Eon and I tried this with the president of
his own company, Jim Reeves. Thanks Jim, this is a really special Syrah that
may be enjoyed now with a meal or cellared for many years!
4) MARSANNY " Clos Du Roy " from the Cote D'Or red Burgundy region, this
young and fresh 2009 ( $34.99 ) is another real steal from Jim Reeves'
portfolio. It's exciting to have it as well as his Crozes-Hermitages. This is,
of course one of the great red burgundy values and made from 100% Pinot Noir by
law. It , too is a great food wine and really fine with turkey and goose and
even wild salmon and much, much more.

EON AND I ALSO DISCOVERED Some Dry Rose and Dry Whites that impressed us
no end :

ROSES :

1) BOXWOOD ESTATE 2010 " Topiary Rose " ( $17.99 ) is a really nice,
complex, sophisticated dry Bordeaux-style rose with a high concentration of
Cabernet Franc. It needs a meal : it's too flavorful to drink all by itself.
That's why if you want to sip the BOXWOOD VINEYARD dry rose you need to , you
need to try the " Boxwood " version for $17.99 that is smoother and silkier and
easier on the palate all by itself.
2) Cotes Du Rhone 2010 Harvest-Dentelle from the DOMAINE ROUGE-BLEU ( a
blend of 70% Grenache and 30% Carignan ) is also a softer easier-to-sip dry
southern French rose. It has a bit more color ( deeper -redder ) than the two
BOXWOOD Virginia, Middleburg dry roses. This is On Special now for $13.99 a
bottle.
3) Cotes-Du-Provence 2010 " Cuvee Tradition " dry biodynamic French rose (
AB certified . 13% alcohol by volume ) from the DOMAINE LES FOUQUES is On
Special for $13.99 a bottle now and showing beautifully! It's a perfect holiday
wine and for this unseasonably warm and balmy weather, too.
4) Dry Virginia rose and Raspberry wine from Leon, Virginia ( $12.99 ) and
made by the RAPIDAN RIVER winery that is now owned by PRINCE MICHEL. This is
quite a bit drier than one would expect, it's not a fruit bomb. As a matter of
fact with a salad using some raspberry vinegar this would be a real treat! You
all should try some. Cheers, it's fun, really it is.

WHITES:

1) Sparkling New Zealand Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc ( $18.99 ) from LAKE
CHALICE and called " Cracklin' Savie " showed really well this past Saturday
when we tasted it and we sold quite a bit when Paulette poured if for you all.
It's brand new and really tasty, fun and refreshing. I called it a great palate
cleanser. Works for me.
2) Cremant De Biurgogne sparkling " Pur Chardonnay " from France's
Burgundy region ( On Special for $14.99 ), made by BAILLY LAPIERRE is a classic
that we love to sell here and have for years. It's so flavorful and wonderful
and a real special treat, and what a value!
3) Chardonnay Estate-Grown from the Los Carneros region of California (
$14.99 ) is slightly-oaked from EGRET and twice now Eon and I have fallen in
love with it. Classy, tasty, bright, filled to the brim with promise : it's a "
keeper! "

APPLE CIDERS From FOGGY RIDGE :
New and Exciting! WE tasted 4 of them with Dawana at our Big-Theme
American Holiday Tasting.

1) Hard Cider " First Fruit " ( $21.99 ) was my favorite of the four. Just
like Goldilocks I found a place to hang my hat and relax and dream of
everything that awaits me.
2) Hard Cider Sweet Stayman " was simply just a bit too fruit-forward and
rich for me, a bit heavier, too on my tongue and palate. It's all personal
taste of course. We also have the " Serious " that is the dries and the most
tart and tangy. Not enough of a finish for me. They are all 750ml bottles and
all sell for $21.99 a bottle. The Handmade is a also quite nice. It comes in
500ml bottle, 7% alcohol and sells for $16.99 a bottle.

THREE BEERS FROM SANTOS : SALES!

1) APRICOT ALE unfiltered wheat ale from PYRAMID is On Special $5.99 a
six-pack of 12 ounce bottles.
2) ABITA LIte beer  is On Special for $5.99 as well. What great deals

Today's Tuesday, September 10th, 2013 Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits' Store Email : Enjoy!

HAPPY YOM KIPPUR that begins at sunset this Saturday, September 14th, 2013!

BY THE WAY, DID YOU ALL KNOW that on the Teddy Roosevelt Bridge , driving to work each day from Virginia that I see on the edge of the Bridge to my left with the Kennedy Center as a backdrop, a " living GREEN " Washington Monument! YES : it's true. Right there, growing before our eyes all summer long is a wondrous, fun and spirited,  shooting upwards tendril vine , a most-certain climbing green vine that quickly grew to cover up the lamp post that became it's anchor, it's grounding for such a living spectacle of sun-loving green growth! I loved being a witness to this and wonder if anyone else has noticed and made the same connection?

FROM MY DRIVER'S SEAT I could see both this living . changing yearly " alive " green  Washington Monument, right to the left of the now scaffold-covered " original ". What fun, what life, what splendor, what a monument this all is to being alive and reaching out for the essential embrace of our sun that keeps us all alive and gives us the unique ability to thrive, stretch our arms and wings, to climb, to reach for so very much. Cheers.

PUMPKIN BEERS GALORE, GINGER BEERS, TOO, GINS POPPING UP ALL OVER, HARD APPLE CIDERS FINDING " New " EXPRESSION : this is a great time for so many categories, the sky's the limit, really it is today as we all scramble just to keep up, just to keep our heads above water. That's a challenge these days as many of you already know. I have to say that I welcome this challenge as it certainly keeps me feeling quite alive and younger, too.

TODAY : The " New " LANDSCAPE is much more than wine and that is something that becomes painfully obvious to me each and every day! I have to try and keep up with all of this, and I welcome writing this weekly store email as it really does help me.

AS YOU ALL COME FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD we try and have at least something from your home , wherever that may be. I wish that there was a better system in place to help us. We get requests for things like Chinese wines, for more plum wines with the plums inside the bottles, for the wines of Uruguay, or Peru, and of Chile, too. That's just scraping the surface, believe me.

TWO YOUNG LADIES from Hungary, one named Anna came in search of their country's wines and were very disappointed that we did not have any good Bull's Blood. We will soon, that is one situation that Michel and I have been working to solve and should have nipped in the bud by the end of this month.

WE TALK WITH YOU , OUR CUSTOMERS and explain that we need more help from our suppliers, brokers, importers, wholesalers, reps to bring more of these things to our attention. For example, I know that Ethiopian Honey Tej wine must still be available? I know that the Ethiopian restaurants here must be selling it? SO, if that's true, why aren't the wholesalers calling us, too : and asking us if we would like to buy any? That would be nice, we would order it.

WHY DON'T THE EMBASSIES work more closely with us all, their Commercial Sections could call us in the store and restaurants to alert us to what is available to us and to you? That would be a " big help ", really it would, hint- hint ...

SPEAKING OF EMBASSIES, yesterday the Embassy of Uruguay had a major wine-tasting from 1-5PM , including the excellent wines of CATAMAJOR,  STAGNARI, ... and , I hope, BODEGAS CARRAU & BOUZA? We carry the BODEGAS CARRAU and the BOUZA ( 2011 Tannat Reserva, Montevideo, $23.99, 15% alcohol by volume, www.bouza@bodegabouza.com ,  ALSO : bouza@bodegabouza.com, Tel : 598-2323-7491 , Chacras del Sur, S.A., INAVI 287 ), we used to carry both the CATAMAJOR and the STAGNARI wines, lots of Tannat and Tannat Reserva. That's the French red grape variety Uruguay has adopted as their own, and done very well with it. The grape comes from France's Madiran region and is the grape with the highest amount of natural Resveratrol, and thus been very much in the public's eye since 2006 when many studies were released as to the benefits to all of us of Resveratrol.

AS A MATTER OF NOTE :  We carry the CHANARMUYO Reserva Family Wine from La Rioja, Argentina : the 2009, $19.99, 15% alcohol by volume, from the Valle De Chanarmuyo, go to : www.chanarmuyo.com.ar for more info. Big, flavorful, a fine food wine when you grill outside in this late summer of ours. Enjoy, stay healthy.

I WANT TO GIVE A " Big SHOUT OUT " TO YOU ALL : for all that you do to help us keep Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits well-stocked. Because of you largely we have the diversity and the variety that we offer you. By so often coming back from trips with wonderfully-enriching experiences that you want to keep alive and healthy, you come in search of products that we have or try and get for you. Together we make a real difference, and for that I want to " MAKE SOME NOISE " for you all! Cheers , thanks, obregado, merci, gracias, prego ....

OUR FAMILY FRIEND is on a two-week trip to Peru and our thoughts and prayers go out to her for a safe and wonderful trip and journey. I have contacted our good friend Melanie Asher that, with her sister, makes their very own Peruvian Piscos : the MACCHU PISCO, $23.99 - and the topflight " La Diablada " , $39.99.

THE " LA DIABLADA " : " is named after an Andean spiritual dance reenacting a legendary fight between anges ( angels ) and demons, and just as the dance strives to achieve perfect harmony , this blend achieves a sumptuous balance of bold , sweet aromas and spicy round flavors." I agree, the Pisco Sours that you made the other weekend with your Aunt Rosa here were sublime Melanie, the very best.Go to : www.macchupisco.com for more info on these two fine products from Melanie that she is now making in Lima, Peru. See you when you return Melanie. Cheers.   We have both here in stock now for you all. What a treat, a fine Peruvian Pisco Sour to make you dream and feel free and good.

Try it where rum is not typically used - for there the Adventure Truly Begins! ... TOUCANO is born of the first flavorful crush of sugar cane. " I've enjoyed this at home now and can attest to it's very fine flavor and taste. Top-notch : glad to find a local distributor for it here - FINALLY! Enjoy.

     3) Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey from SPEAKEASY ( $30.99 a 750ml bottle, 47.2% alcohol by volume , distilled in Kentucky, bottled in Bardstown Club Distilling Company, Bardstown, Nelson, County, Kentucky ) : Original Sour Mash Bourbon. Try some. Cheers.

I have a new respect for it as it was featured in the second-to-last James Bond movie that I saw with my son. That must have cost the people of GORDON'S several pretty pounds, for get the pennies! GREAT VALUE. Try some again as if for the very first time. Who knows, Daniel Craig might be there in the same restaurant or bar when you ask for it " shaken, not stirred " ... Cheers everyone.

WINE From Michel & Tony :

          WHITE :

     1) 2011 Sauvignon Blanc  from South Africa's Swartland region, made by RIEBEEK CELLARS ( $7.99, 12.5% alcohol by volume,  ) : what a delightfully engaging crisp and dry white wine, and what incredible value, too. Great outside with shellfish, goats' cheese, salads with a fine mustard vinaigrette, oh yeah. Nice on a boat, a sail boat would be ideal, anchored, the sun in full splendor, you there at the edges sipping wine, feeding each other some goats' cheese, or the goat and cow version that's a bit firmer and won't fall into the water as might the goats' cheese if the boat rocks, with you there I feel most certain that it will! Cheers.

     2) Viognier 2012 from Argentina's La Rioja region, from CHANARMUYO, $On Special for $9.99 - regularly $13.99, this 13% alcohol by volume dry white is quite engaging , quite the listener, will hear  your concerns, and help you to deal with them as you have a moment to enjoy with family and friends with a meal somewhere close at hand. It's bright, it's fresh, it's flavorful, it's firm with flesh but well-balanced and tastes really good in this 90 degree weather of ours now. Go to :www.chanarmuyo.com.ar for more info. Cheers.

     3) Sauvignon Blanc From New Zealand's Marlborough region, this TEN SISTER'S dry white, 2011, is showing beautifully now , reminds me of nice Sancerre that is fruit-forward, bright, still steely but less so than some, smooth, sits so elegantly on one's palate, a delight ( On Special for $13.99, regularly $16.99 a bottle, 13% alcohol by volume, go to : www.TenSisters.co.nz for more info. Cheers.

THIS WEEKEND ON SATURDAY afternoon I was " waxing poetic " as is my serendipitous artistic nature and I started to talk to Sara and her husband about the indigenous two grapes found in the ADOLI GHIS dry white mainland Greek mineral-laden wine : the Lagorthi ( 70% ) and the Aspoudes ( 30% )  blend - that they had the unique capability with their root systems that are so ancient to still grown from them tendrils that reach out, burrow the soil and rock around the roots, grow Peacock-like, colorful plums that fan and thus air the roots themselves and provide them both with some color and some more room to breathe and expand. I was waiting for some reaction. I was about to continue this description, to say that the roots that are living have their own language. That when they speak of the vines above they refer to them as being " down under " and in the dark, so-to-speak. I would have , too. But I did not want to continue wi thout admitting that what I was telling was just a story to draw attention to these two delightful grapes from Greece that Sotiris said are not used for any other wines that he knows about. SO : the morale of this story  : always remember the two indigenous grapes - Lagorthi and Aspoudes, that they have fine tendrils with Peacock feather-like fans to illuminate these roots and bring color and life to the grapes they eventually grow " down under ". It's all depends on one's perspective or point-of-view. Cheers.

     4) 2011 Dry Greek white blend of indigenous grapes called Lagorthi and Aspoudes ( read above ) that produce this magnificent dry white Greek wine , the ADOLI GHIS that, when less chilled is rounder and fuller and softer on one's palate. When chilled it is leaner, sterner, more firm, less fleshy, with higher levels of acids and minerals to taunt and tease and ultimately please one's palate. We sell it for $21.99 and are almost sold-out because of our Greek wine-tasting here this Saturday with Sotiris Bafitis that was a grand success! What a treat, what a wine. Thanks Sotiris. After your tasting Michel came up to me and complemented your fine selection of Greek wines as perhaps the best available to us? I agree, excellent job.

     5) 2012 Pino & Toi dry white Veneto white, a refreshing and flavorful wine by MACULAN that's a blend of three grapes : Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio and Tocai " get it?!? It sells for $10.99 a bottle, 12.5% a;cohol by volume, from Breganze, Italy : it's charming, it's delightful. Jody Jackman poured it here this past weekend. Thanks, grazie Jody e a presto!

          ROSE :

     1)  2012 Cape Rose from RIEBEEK CELLARS in South Africa's Swartland region ( $8.99, 13% alcohol by volume, est. 1941, 100% Pinotage dry rose ) : " Abundant and distinctive flavours of fresh strawberries and ripe cherries with a crisp dryness on the palate will be charming at many an occasion. .. enjoy a glass on its own or pair with seafood and light meals with smoky flavours. "

     2) Dry Greek rose blend made from the 85%  Xinomavro and 15% Moschomavro grapes in this 2012 from DIOFILI at the Siatista Winery ( $14.99, 13% alcohol by volume ) : made from 70 year-old vines this is spectacular and so fresh and bright and " friendly " and right. It was a big hit this weekend when Sotiris poured it. Everyone loved it, even those that usually do not like rose wines Heard that as frequent refrain as people grabbed a bottle and walked away with it. Cheers.

          REDS :

     1) 2011 dry red Piemonte Barbera red from Italy, from BRICCO Del TATI ( $8.99, 12.5% alcohol by volume, go to : www.briccodeitati.com for more info ) : " ... we make this delightfully fresh Barbera. We make it for ourselves, friends, and family. " Mary Beth & Manu. It's a beauty : so lively, so bright, such a tasty treat to enjoy with many a meal year-round!

     2) La Cappucina " Madego " Biodynamic ( made with organic grapes of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Carmenere ) , this Veneto dry red blend 2011, On Special for $11.99, regularly $14.99, estate-bottled medium-to-light-bodied red is fleshier, riper, ,more fruit-forward, and easier to sip from the first sip than the past vintage. it's a great price now. Chill slightly and serve inside or outside, with many a grilled or well-seasoned meal. Andrew Stover tasted us on it recently and we gave him an order immediately once we tried it. Excellent.

     3) 2011 Chianti Colli Senesi from the TENUTA VALDIPIATTA ( $16.99, 14% alcohol by volume ) : made in Montepulciano from their grapes this 2011 is perfect hot-weather dry red. medium-to-light-bodied, chill thirty minutes to focus  and firm-up and energize these toasty cherry-berry flavors that are quite polished and still young. This is perfect outside with many a meal. Love the colorful label, too. It's a well-balanced wine where the tannins and acids are softer and allow the fruit and accents of spice to find true expression. " Enjoy with hearty and red sauced pastas, red meats, game, roasts and aged cheeses." It will fill-out more with time.
WED HAVE ENJOYED selling a whole lot of the excellent vintage 2008 of this Colli Senesi up until last week when the last bottle was sold. AS A MATTER of interest one of our customers this Saturday stopped me to tell me what a big success the 2008 VALDIPIATTA was : he and his friends loved it. What more can any wine ask?!? That's success, that's pure enjoyment and satisfaction, and all for only $16.99 a bottle. Thanks for tasting it here this past weekend Jodi.

     4) 2010 1005 Agiorgitiko dry Greek red from the MITRAVELAS ESTATE ( $25.99, 14.5% alcohol by volume ) is seriously serious, tasty, great classic Greek wine to enjoy with a meal. Take a sip, close your eyes, lean your head back and swallow " in steps ", not all at once, move the liquid around your mouth with your tongue. hold your breath shake your head ever so slightly, pause, reflect : let the wine charm you as you charm it : what a tactile, wonderfully personal, unique experience, swallow and smack your lips to get whatever acidity there is and taste the finish now for a very long time. Thanks Sotiris for tasting this here this past Saturday. What a wine.

CLEVELAND PARK WINES & SPIRITS is the place to be with this heat and humidity. It's nice and cool here and you can come in and chill-down a bit and collect your thoughts and we will show you some of the CONSTANT, EVER-CHANGING, continuously-growing landscape of wines, beers, spirits, apple ciders, liqueurs, waters, sodas, and more. It's pretty amazing and it takes us by surprise and sometimes we are caught running up to catch up to whatever " new " and exciting!

I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH WITH FAMILY to have my lunch this past Saturday at Pulpo. I did not have much time but the time that I did have was thoroughly enjoyable. My wife really enjoyed herself. The general manager Dave Hansen came to greet us. He has come from California recently to lend his special talents and skills to make PULPO be all that it can. As it now joins the other celebrated neighborhood " success stories " of RIPPLE, DINO, ARDEO, NAM VIET, SPICES, LAVANDOU, BIBLO'S, SORRISO, INDIQUE, ST. ARNOLDS, PALENA , MEDIUM RARE, and so many more : exciting.

I HAVE ENJOYED ON Saturday afternoon's here listening to regular customers like Samantha come in with her friend and speak about their dining experiences at PULPO. She said that she might still prefer the old chef and not the " new " one : Billy Klein. She's willing to give Billy a chance , of course, and will return again and I will ask her what she thinks then? That's okay, she's the only one that has said this so far. Mostly everything I hear is positive about PULPO. That's so encouraging, we need this!

AS YOU MAY REMEMBER that space lay empty for so many years - more than seven - when McDonald's left there. It was an eye-sore : now it's exciting and a " destination ". I always want to enter each time I pass as I both see and hear the musicians and their " live music ". That calls out to me each and every time! I'm a sucker for live music, I really am. I would like to see - to hear more of it here in our neighborhood. I believe it will help to keep many of our younger residents here and not going to other D.C. neighborhoods because we are not showing enough of our vibrant, thrilling, electric, energized and entertaining side! Show some of our skin- so-to-speak, ;  show we can still dance and samba and fox trot and tango. We'll make no bones about " our lines " : they will not be blurred - they will be true and clear, fun, fresh and alive!

ANYWAY, Dave has come here to trade stories, talk shop, talk ideas and together gain some perspective. I have been talking of going there and I had my chance this past Saturday. I spoke with him at our table and asked him for recommendations. As he spoke I told our waiter to bring us this, bring us that, don't forget  it, maybe bring us two?!? Oh yes, that's sounds so good, can't wait to try this. It was like a bit of quick theater that my family enjoyed listening to. Made their jobs that much easier. With a refreshing, light white Sangria and two small platters to greet us we were off with our lively conversation. One dish after another, like Spanish tapas kept arriving and we would each take our portions and taste , try on for size, fit and feel what we liked or did not so much.

I LOVED THE frittatas of Serrano Ham, Chorizo, Smoked Salmon. The Eggs Benedict were really tasty, too. The Ensaladas of White Bean and Pearl Cous Cous really hit the spot as well. It was a theatrical treat of color, sound, smells , textures, solids-to-liquids. The service was very good , and as a special treat our waiter gave us an extra-helping of the Smoked Salmon on the Frittata. He may do the same for you?

I GOT TO MEET the owner Dino Tapper that came to our table personally to welcome us. That was nice. We spoke awhile and I remembered the old days of Floriana. That took me back a ways.

I DID NOT GET to meet executive chef/ partner Billy Klein. That's okay. Dave pointed him out to me in the kitchen feet away from us, with his back to us, facing the ovens and stoves and busy at work as one would expect and hope.

HAVING DAVE HANSEN here in our neighborhood encourages me. It's a good sign. Energy, thought, inspiration, new ideas being tossed about by him and his staff, just like by all of us - continually as we do all that we can to keep the business, the heart-and-soul pf Cleveland Park PUMPING and ALIVE. We are a force to be reckoned with, we are special, we are important to Washington D.C. Cleveland Park 20008 is a " Happenin' Place " and we are all proud of it and doing all that we can as businesses, residents, neighbors, caring individuals, guests from around the world, to keep the flame bright, marching ahead, marching on, gathering ...

AS WE GATHER AGAIN TOMORROW as a team, as a working and functioning unit of caring, motivated, dedicated, thoughtful, civic, social, sharing people that are working constantly for a better world, a better life, less prejudice, less hunger, less inequality on every level, a place where all our concerns and voices may be better heard and answered.

WHERE HAVE WE COME FROM, where have we gone, where will we still go?! Keep the dreams alive, keep them coming, eat your fears, chew them, and spit them out, and never fear fear as it will eat us all alive.

I WOKE UP FROM A DREAM today , as I did yesterday and the day before and I rushed to my typewriter to record my thoughts, feelings, impressions, words and sentiments before they disappeared as quickly as they came. I found myself doing this yesterday on scraps of pieces of paper while out and about with my son and wife. It did not matter! Poetry, emotion, a grand release that was nice later when cooking dinner and ...

ENJOYING MY GLASS  of PIAN DI NOVA 2010, a dry Tuscan red blend from IL BORRO in Arezzo, Italy of 75% Syrah and 25% Sangiovese,$32.99, 13.5% alcohol by volume. I kept day-dreaming by the grill : " So this is what Syrah from Tuscany can taste like : a nice mouth-feel, a nice grip, a gentle girth, a warmth of soft spice and dusty earth, a youth that is still finding it;s way, learning it worth, paying it's dues. I would like to come back to this 2010 PIAN DI NOVA in another three or so years!

CLEVELAND PARK WINES & SPIRITS is the place to be with this heat and humidity.
It's nice and cool here and you can come in and chill-down a bit and collect
your thoughts and we will show you some of the CONSTANT, EVER-CHANGING,

waters, sodas, and more. It's pretty amazing and it takes us by surprise and
sometimes we are caught running up to catch up to whatever " new " development
that was just proposed to us.

FOR EXAMPLE : Lindsay Marsh just showed Michel and me this past week an
assortment of the " new " whiskies from the LEOPOLD BROS. I have two here in the
office. We tasted 19 I believe? I know that we tasted a number of them and that
they are working on a " new " one that they cannot as yet divulge.

LINDSAY MARSH has come to the store now and already tasted five or so of these
LEOPOLD BROS. whiskies. They were already really well-received. When Michel and
I tried them last week we had nothing but praise for them. I think that we have
six of them now in the store. Here are two that I brought to the office :

1)  New York Apple Flavored Whisky ( $35.99, 40% alcohol by volume, Batch
No. 1226, www.leopoldbros.com, Denver, CO. 80239) made from : " ... New York
State apples marry perfectly with the subtle oak, vanilla, and raisin finish of
our whiskey in this uniquely blended spirit ". It's so rich and thick and full

leaving a bit still on your tongue - as the flavors explode and intensify and
multiply. it's pretty much like enjoying a good bottle of wine. You pay for the
whole bottle so get your money's worth and let the flavors and tastes linger and
make their subtle influences known fully to you. The patience will be well worth

In Anthony Quinn's Weekly Store Email Of Tuesday, August 6th, 2013 He Speaks Of VALENTIN BIANCHI Winery In San Rafael, Mendoza, Argentina & The " Elsa Vineyard " Malbec That Started Things In Mid Eighties In Washington D.C.!

Cleveland Park Ales.Beers,Ciders,Liqueurs,Liquors,Waters& Wines!
FORGET? FORGOTTEN? The Pace Continues at such an intensity that our blinders are all and in place to protect us from being bombarded with too much information that we cannot possibly absorb. SO : Let me share with you a story to start this email.

IT'S ABOUT ELSA, it's a bout one of our customers that we have known for years like so many of you. It's time to put names to so many of your faces. This is the face of Elsa. She's such a wonderful character and I met her years ago here and we always spoke of the VALENTIN BIANCHI " Elsa's Vineyard " dry red Malbec, and sometimes even of the " Elsa's Vineyard dry Chenin Blanc. How many of you know and remember these wines? It goes back awhile, it really does.

WITH MY OWN " Bottle Age " I like to share some perspective, some history, some of the " then " to get to the " now " of today. I hope you do not mind, I hope you enjoy and can use this information as you navigate through the myriad that is today's wine and food scene here in Washington D.C.? ALWAYS please feel free to ask me for any clarification on anything that I write about.

I WOULD LOVE to hear more from you all so that we may all do our jobs better in these difficult times where every sale is important to us from the smallest to the largest. So please do comment , no inquiry or comment from you will not be welcome. As a matter of fact, any comment or inquiry from you today is a reason for celebration as today, so many push the LIKE button , or not, and my constant question when I see that something is LIKED is : " What is ' liked ' about it?!? " . SO : let's celebrate more and share more and please tell us what you LIKE or LIKE-NOT( ! ) about what we are doing or failing to do for you?

BUT BACK TO ELSA, I did not know that this fine, beaming, sparkling-eyed lady's name was Elsa. It would not have mattered, except it is always nice to know a customer's name. It helps break the ice when we can address you all by name and not use the ancient old terms of " Governor " - Herbie used to say that , or " Buddy ", or " Sport ".

I SIMPLY KNEW ELSA and who she was and then I began to know her daughter, too that shops here as well when she is home. Now I am getting to know Elsa's daughter's boyfriend-fiancee as well. It's all one big-glorious family here.

THE " Elsa's Vineyard " Malbec was THE FIRST Argentina Malbec to come here to Washington D.C. Wow, that's something, that's a bit or real history for us all.

BACK THEN " Malbec " WAS NOTHING here in Washington D.C. back in mid-to-late eighties. No one knew of Malbec back then except for the " Black Wines "  of France's Lot region south of Bordeaux where the Malbec was wither used 100% to make these dark and inky wines that required a whole lot of patience and cellaring-time before drinking.

I USED TO HAVE many conversations with my father when we lived in Paris, France back in the early seventies about the " black wines " of Cahors which is both a picturesque town and region as well. We started buying our Cahors at the local Nicolas wine stores and then started to patronize Steven Spurrier's Cave De La Madeleine before the earth-moving-wine-changing-landscape wine-tasting of Steven's back in 1976 when California and French wines were tasted blind.

SO ELSA would always ask me for the " Elsa's Vineyard " Mendoza, Argentina dry value-oriented Malbec that we sold forever for $4.99, them $5.99, then $ 6.99 a bottle : get the picture. It was a great quaffing dry red from Argentina and it sold really well.

ALFREDO BARTHOLOMAUS and NORA FAVELUKES of Billington Imports beat the pavements here and around Washington D.C. and placed and sold well this " value " dry red Malbec, and " value " dry white Chenin Blanc.

" Elsa's Vineyard " was named for the daughter of owner Valentin Bianchi in San Rafael, Mendoza, in the southern part of Mendoza. I was there. I was wined and dined by the Bianchi family and met brothers Roberto and Valentin, their parents, their " other " brother, but I do not remember ever meeting Elsa and that saddens me as I did walk down and photograph her vines named after her.

I TOOK PICTURES with a camera with film in it, not digital. I had rolls of film and I took them to a store to have developed and I was like a giddy child waiting breathlessly for them to be developed so that I could see the pictures I had once taken in both Mendoza and in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

BACK THEN in 1995 Malbec was still relatively unknown. It was the Cabernet Sauvignon that was " king " back then with the NAVARO COREAS " Collecion Privada " that everything was once measured against : always the Cabernet Sauvignon. The whites were relatively unknown back then.

IT TOOK PAUL HOBBS that used to make the wines of SIMI WINERY in California to go to Argentina and to make at CATENA the oaky and buttery marriage in a Chardonnay that made people look to Argentina for more than Cabernet Sauvignon. ALL OF A SUDDEN, besides the BUZZ over the red dry Cabernet Sauvignon there was also tremendous BUZZ over the dry Chardonnay of Nicolas Catena. There was no buzz yet over the Malbec grape. It was still being developed and pretty much in the shadows.

THE BUZZ would also soon come on winemaker/owner Susana Balbo's dry and aromatic and floral Torrontes that we still sell really well today. She was the lonely female Argentina winemaker working alongside many men winemakers : together this group brought Argentina wines to where it is today. According to Susana that spent some time here with us at Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits, everyone discouraged her from making her version of a dry , floral white Torrontes, and yet once out it sold fabulously and everyone had to make a similar version and follow in her footsteps!

NOW the BUZZ for the Malbec grape has come along, and it's still very much with us today. So VALENTIN BIANCHI and their " Elsa's Vineyard " Malbec were way ahead of the crowd and deserve to be remembered for blazing the trail, being THE FIRST to introduce their Malbec to us here in the United States back in the mid eighties. Gracias Valentin, gracias Elsa e Elsa, e Alfredo e Nora e todos involved in getting the ball rolling here so many years ago when the wine scene was so very different.

GRACIAS ELSA our good customer for being here last week and tasting with Jim Reeves and taking a picture and posting it on our Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits Facebook page. I have been meaning now for a week to share some of this story and am now finally doing it here in today's Tuesday weekly store email. Thanks for giving me this platform to share some of the history of wine here in Washington D.C. Northwest as I have seen it unfold and grow, brands coming and going, trends appearing and disappearing, brands and grapes becoming discovered and then forgotten over the last thirty-plus years. What a glorious trip it has been.
